“Black in Boca” — The First Song After Mother
The first piece I created after Mother was Black in Boca. My vision is for this to be the opening number of the show—the song that immediately drops you into the world of the Mitchell family and sets the tone for Act I.
Quick disclaimer: This is an early version of the song. It hasn’t been refined, workshopped, or polished yet. You’re hearing it exactly where it is right now—messy edges and all. I’m sharing intentionally as part of the creative process.
The melody came to me in the place where I do my most creative thinking: on the elliptical at my gym. I hopped off, went home, and plunked out a rough version on my kids’ electric piano—just enough to capture the hook that was stuck in my head. I fed those notes into Suno, ran it through a few iterations, tweaked a bunch of prompts, and slowly watched it take shape.
And then it happened. That moment where the song clicks. Where you hear something back and think. “Oh. I can really do this.” I love the result. This song is what convinced me that maybe—just maybe—I could build an actual, Broadway-level musical from scratch.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Let me know what hits you, what doesn’t, what surprises you. I’m all ears.
