The song that started it all is “Mother.”

It began as a poem I wrote for my mother ten years ago, in October 2015. No AI. Just love—and a little inspiration—guiding me as I tried to find the right words. As you can imagine, this song is especially meaningful to me. Every word was chosen deliberately, shaped and reshaped over the ten years it took me to finally finish the poem. I’ve included the original poem below.

Quick disclaimer: This is an early version of the song. It hasn’t been refined, workshopped, or polished yet. You’re hearing it exactly where it is right now—messy edges and all. I’m sharing intentionally as part of the creative process.

Mother

by Ronald Mitchell (for Carole Mitchell)

Many poems have been written

Many songs have been sung

Many odes been recited

Many dedications have been done

Many tears have been dried

Many bellies have been fed

Many hugs have been given

Many prayers have been said

A mother is sacred to many

A mother is cursed by so few

A mother is praised for so much

Yet seldom given her due

A mother is loved for just caring

A mother is loved for being there

A mother is loved for defending

A mother is loved beyond compare

How can I say something different

Something never recited before

How can I convey true emotion

Beautiful, uncensored and raw

Have I deluded myself

Hunting words compelling and new

Have I lost sight of what matters

My love and appreciation of you

As I tell you “I love you”

Hear the tone in my voice

Focus not on the language

But in the sentiment rejoice

“Love” is a word used too often

Bandied from one to another

Yet, the meaning of love is still sacred

A meaning synonymous with “Mother”
